Phonics Homework
Phonics homework is a way for your child to practise the sounds (phonemes) and words they are learning in school through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme. It usually involves reading their phonetically decodable e-book on the Collins e-Reader site, along with short, fun activities to reinforce new sounds and tricky words.
How often should we do phonics homework?
We recommend a little and often approach – around 10 minutes a day is ideal. Short, regular practice is much more effective than longer, less frequent sessions.tent
What will my child bring home?
-
A phonics e-book matched to the sounds they have learned in school. (via Collins Hub)
-
Revision List with focus sounds, new words and tricky words. This will be uploaded online and sent home physically with your child.
What if my child finds it tricky?
That’s completely normal! New sounds take time to secure. You can:
-
Praise their effort, not just their accuracy.
-
Gently remind them to use their phonics to sound out words.
-
Let them listen to you read a page first to build confidence.
-
Keep sessions short and positive – stop before they get tired or frustrated.
Why is phonics homework important?
Regular practice at home builds on classroom learning and helps your child:
-
Become a more confident and fluent reader.
-
Secure the sounds needed for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.
-
Develop a lifelong love of reading through positive, shared experiences.
