Citizenship

At Ash Grove Academy, we believe in preparing our children to understand what it means to be well-rounded citizens of the future.

Throughout their educational journey at Ash Grove, children learn the basic rules and skills for keeping themselves healthy and safe and for behaving well. They have opportunities to show they can take some responsibility for themselves and their environment. They begin to learn about their own and other people's feelings and become aware of the views, needs and rights of other children and older people.

As members of a class and school community, they learn social skills such as how to share, take turns, play, help others, resolve simple arguments and resist bullying, 'dares' and negative peer pressure. They begin to take an active part in the life of their school and their community.

These key aspects of learning how to be a good citizen are inter-woven into all aspects of our school systems, including:

  • Our School Values

  • School behaviour expectations and learning habits

  • Our role as a Rights Respecting school, supporting children to know their own rights and respect those of others

  • PSHE education, including understanding their protective factors and where they belong

  • Fundraising for local, national and global causes

  • School trips and residentials

  • School Ambassadors

  • Assemblies and opportunities to share and celebrate successes

  • Corridor displays

  • Clubs and enrichment opportunities

  • Family events and celebrations

  • Community engagement, including multi-generational play sessions
